Vision and Values

Vision

A future where people in recovery from addiction to drugs, alcohol, or harmful behaviours live free and contribute positively to society.

Mission

We provide group therapy, support, and connection for adults in a safe and welcoming community space.

Read more about our approach.

Values

💜 Caring – We listen with empathy and treat everyone with kindness and respect.

👥 People First – We focus on what matters most to the people we support and shape our work around their needs.

🌍 Community – We build connections and take part in activities that strengthen our community and support well-being.

🎯 Competence – We take pride in our skills and always aim to do our work to the highest standard.

✨ Integrity – We are open, honest, and ethical in everything we do.

Aim

We help families understand and heal the pain behind addiction, creating brighter futures for generations.

Recovery

At The Living Room, we see recovery as a journey of change. It’s about improving your health and well-being, taking back control of your life, and working towards your full potential — all without relying on addictive substances or behaviours.

Charitable Objects

(a) to preserve and protect the health of all persons who are in danger of becoming addicted to, or dependent upon, drugs of any description, alcohol, solvents or other addictive substances or behaviours as well as their family members within the County of Hertfordshire and such other places as the trustees shall from time to time decide by the provision of counselling and recovery and support services.

(b) to advance the education of professionals working in the field of addiction treatment by the provision of professional training, support services and information.

Diversity, Equality, Equity and Inclusion

We are committed to fostering equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion both within and outside our organisation. We strive to deepen our understanding and support of others, valuing people for who they are and actively working to eliminate discrimination.

Safeguarding

Everyone has the right to live free from harm, abuse, and exploitation.

At The Living Room, we are committed to protecting the rights of all adults at risk, regardless of age, culture, disability, gender, language, racial origin, religious beliefs, or sexual identity. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and we take it very seriously.

If you have a concern about safety or well-being, you can speak to one of our safeguarding leads:

  • Designated Safeguarding Lead: Adrienne Arthurs

  • Deputy Safeguarding Lead: Debbie Coote

  • Counsellor Safeguarding Lead: Michelle Smale

Our Standards

The Living Room is proud to hold the Charity Excellence Framework Quality Mark and to be recognised as a Living Wage Employer. We also follow the guidance of the Fundraising Regulator, making sure our fundraising is open, honest, and respectful.

We are committed to good governance and fully follow the 2023 Charity Governance Code.

The Living Room Strategy 2024 - 2027

Our strategic themes:

  1. We will provide a reliable service for adults with addiction.
  2. We will have a separate support service for their family, caregivers, and friends.
  3. We will expand our training and development opportunities.
  4. We will let people know who we are and what we do.
  5. We will make our services more accessible.
  6. We will focus on our environmental, social and governance goals.

Our Priorities:

  1. Increase successful graduations to 63%, by supporting people in their recovery journey beyond abstinence, promoting personal growth, meaningful relationships, and reintegration into the community.
  2. Be a trusted addiction training partner, equipping professionals to make a real difference in people’s lives.
  3. Increase the number of joint initiatives with statutory agencies by 15% through impactful storytelling about our recovery support.
  4. We will foster a more inclusive and equitable approach to recovery by promoting access through digital formats and platforms.
  5. We will embed ESG principles into every aspect of our operations, ensuring continuous improvement in environmental responsibility, social impact, and good governance.

Our assurances:

We will ensure our services are as accessible as possible. We will improve our sustainability.  We plan to provide an online service when funding permits.

She was the feisty, funny, and quirky lady who entertained us with her antics in the 2006 series. She is also a lady who struggled with, and eventually sadly lost her life to, an eating disorder.
